The Top Five Things to do at Roper Mountain Science Center

โ€ฆAfter Checking Out All the Gorgeous Butterfly Adventure Butterflies!

June 8, 2016
While the kids are SO excited about the upcoming Roper Mountain Science Center Butterfly Adventure, as a parent you realize your little ones can only play hide and seek with the butterflies for so long! Never fear, there are plenty of other exciting and educational activities for kids of all ages! In fact, we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the five additional most fun things to do while spending the day at Roper Mountain Science Center.

  • Now that you’ve gotten some really good photos of a Painted Lady butterfly landing atop your son’s outstretched finger, take a few moments and check out the educational displays showcasing the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. Roper Mountain Science Center staff will be available to answer questions on everything from how butterfly eggs hatch, to what and how much a caterpillar eats.
  • Visit the Darrell W. Harrison Hall of Natural Sciences and spend time in the Marine Lab with its six large aquaria and interactive tide pool tank. Here the kids can safely touch a live stingray and interact with additional small aquatic creatures.
  • Inside the Ecology Lab everyone in your group will be fascinated by the different South Carolina habitat displays. From the mountains featuring a Mountain Trout Stream and Beaver/Turtle Pond to the coast with its Cypress Swamp complete with a live alligator and nearby Salt Marsh, there is also a Carolina Bay habitat full of carnivorous plants and even a live honeybee hive.
  • Are the kids getting restless? Head outside and let them run free on the nature trail, play in the natural playground or search for turtles around the pond. Since outside food and beverages are welcome, take advantage of the RMSC picnic areas and stop for a quick snack or relaxing lunch. There will also be some food vendors on site on the weekends (Friday and Saturday).
  • No trip to Roper Mountain Science Center is complete without visiting the Living History Farm. Authentic log cabins, a blacksmith shop, barn, corn crib and one-room schoolhouse are just some of the buildings which have been relocated and reconstructed on the 62-acre facility. Depending on the day, volunteers in period dress will be churning butter, making candles or spinning yarn, giving everyone a small glimpse of Upstate life during the early 1800’s.
For the first time in its 31-year history Roper Mountain Science Center will be open to the public during the week and admission to Butterfly Adventure includes access to all featured exhibits and activities. Make plans now to come out and spend the day. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for children 4 through 12, and free for 3 and under, as well as RMSC members. Please visit ropermountain.org for additional information and to purchase tickets.
