Indigenous -Native American-Names in our area

Such as Lakes: Jocassee and Keowee and Toxaway

August 3, 2021

I have never lost my fascination on the many Native American names across the upstate.  I would bet your kids would enjoy learning about those as well.

Lakes

Lake Keowee:

The name Keowee (ᎨᎣᏫ) is a Cherokee word: it is roughly translated as "place of the mullberries." The historic Keowee Town had been located on the bank of the Keowee River and was the largest of the seven Cherokee Lower Towns in the colonial period, in what became the state of South Carolina.

South Carolina Lakes Lake Keowee. Constructed by Duke Power Company to generate hydroelectric power, Lake Keowee covers Keowee Town, site of the capital of the Lower Cherokee Nation. Keowee, meaning "Place of the Mulberries," was visited by Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto when he came through the area in 1540.  (wikipedia)

Lake Jocassee:

The name Jocassee means 'Place of the Lost One. ' The river valleys were home to the lower towns of the Cherokee Nation; the site of Jocassee Town now lies 300 feet beneath the surface of the lake, near the beginning of the Keowee River. (jocasseewild.org)

The name Jocassee comes from a Cherokee legend about a maiden of that name. An Oconee tribe, the "Brown Vipers" led by Chief Attakulla, inhabited the west side of the Whitewater River, while a rival tribe, "The Green Birds", lived on the east. (wikipedia)

Lake Toxaway

In fact, popular legend has it that the word “Toxaway” is the anglicized version of the Cherokee phrase “ta ha wey” meaning land of the red bird. Prior to the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), white explorers were rarely seen in this southwestern portion of North Carolina.
