Childrens Museum of Upstate-Greenville Introduces- Your Healthy Body

Thank you ,Prisma and Thanks TCMU for allowing my family to give it a "test run"!!!!

April 23, 2022

Thank you to The Childrens Museum of the Upstate-Greenville and to Prisma for allowing my family to check out the INCREDIBLE Prisma interactive display downtown Greenville.  My 10-year-old grandson loved the vacuum-tubes within the display and my 5-year-old, the creepy giant stomach that growled as he walked inside to slide down. So there was something there for a wide range of children's ages!  It is so well done and worth returning to (it's soon after you enter and pay admission) after seeing the entire museum.  It's great to go in weekday quieter hours to take your time on things like putt-putt or a giant game of chess but do not be afraid of the crowds on weekends as the central play area was also a favorite and those are always more fun with more kids around!!  See visiting address and hours at the bottom of this article--

Thanks SO much TCMU and Prisma!!!

Opening March 12, reimagined exhibit includes interactive nine-foot-tall organs, an ambulance and teddy bear clinic

GREENVILLE, S.C.—The Children’s Museum of the Upstate–Greenville is excited to announce the renovation of its Prisma Health Children’s Hospital exhibit. The exhibit is sponsored by Prisma Health and will open to the public on March 12.

The Prisma Health Children’s Hospital exhibit, which occupies over 1,600 square feet on the museum’s main floor, features an expansive anatomy center with large, three-dimensional organs, including the heart, brain, lungs and stomach. Each organ, sitting at approximately 9 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide, is large enough to walk through and is specifically designed with interactive components for intentional learning and imaginative play. Additionally, the exhibit includes a model ambulance, alongside areas for children to learn and pretend they are medical professionals, with activities ranging from examining their teddy-bear patients to scrubbing in like physicians do for surgery. Children also can learn about common medical equipment and procedures. The exhibit also features a rock-climbing wall and prompts to encourage physical activity.

The exhibit was designed with the goal of introducing children and their caregivers to healthcare and healthy habits, in a child-friendly, engaging and positive way. Through the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital at TCMU, children will gain an appreciation for the human body, its essential functions and the need for healthy habits at a young age. Children will also experience a healthcare environment in a stress-free space in the hopes of reducing anxiety should they experience clinic settings in real life.

As one of only two hospitals in the Upstate that has Certified Child Life Specialists on its staff, the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital team focuses on reducing stress related to healthcare experiences and helping families create healthy coping strategies. TCMU is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring these focuses to life through play, self-expression and educational exhibit components. “We are excited to combine the expertise of pediatricians, pediatric child life specialists and the children’s museum design team to teach children about their bodies and how to keep themselves healthy,” said Robin LaCroix, MD, medical director of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate. “The displays use different approaches to learning and real hands-on experiences to connect with children to allow them to learn and understand in the style that is best for them.”

“The Children's Museum of the Upstate is immensely grateful for the support from Prisma Health to make this incredible renovation possible,” said Lauren Luneckas, TCMU’s executive director. “We can’t wait for Upstate families to experience this educational space together and learn more about healthcare, the human body and healthy habits in such a fun and dynamic setting.”

This exhibit was designed and fabricated in partnership with Kraemer Design + Production, Inc., an attraction design company based in Cincinnati, Ohio. This exhibit will be the largest children's museum interactive exhibit dedicated to healthcare and anatomy in Upstate South Carolina. Additionally, as TCMU-Greenville is one of the largest children's museums in the Southeast, this exhibit will only further reinforce TCMU as a premiere destination for families across the Southeast.

The Prisma Health Children’s Hospital exhibit will officially open to the public 9 a.m., Saturday, March 12. The museum will host a Media Morning at 8 a.m., Friday, March 11, and a Members Night at 5:30 p.m., Friday, March 11. For any media interested in attending the Media Morning, or for any other questions, please contact Jessie Cappello, museum manager of marketing and communications, at jcappello@tcmupstate.org or 864-553-7900.
